Congratulations, you’re engaged!

You’ve booked the perfect venue and found an amazing photographer. Now what? In this article, we’ll be showing you how to plan your engagement photography session!

If you’ve already decided to book an engagement session with your wedding photographer, you’ve made a great decision!

While engagement shoots are not a necessity, it’s definitely worth considering because you get to:

        • Experience being guided by your photographer
        • See what you look like in photos before the big day
        • Get excited about your wedding day photos
        • Receive stunning images to share with friends and family

Already thinking of booking an engagement session? Here are some helpful tips for planning your engagement session.

Choosing your Location

The great thing about an engagement session that makes it different from the wedding day portrait session is that you are not limited to locations due to distance, as you can be on your wedding day.

Do you have a favourite spot together? A first date location? The place where the proposal happened? Perhaps your favourite neighbourhood?

Think about some meaningful places for both of you and that is a great place to start!

If you’re looking for something different, talk to your photographer and start with whether you would like a ‘city’ vibe, a ‘nature’ vibe, or something completely out of the ordinary.

General Location Ideas

  • The Local City Park – Bring a picnic basket and you can make a date out of it after!
  • On the Beach
  • In the Forest
  • Neighbourhood
  • “Old/Historic” Town Area
  • Suspension Bridges
  • In Your Own Home

Unique Location Ideas:

  • Rooftops (we know of a few!)
  • In your car for a road trip theme
  • Your Favourite Brewery
  • Your Favourite Cafe
  • Amusement park
  • An Old Record Store
  • An Old Book Store

Picking your Outfits

The first thing to remember is to pick something you’re confident but comfortable in, because the last thing you want to worry about is having to adjust a clingy shirt or pull your dress down.

If you pick something you feel confident in, it will show in the photos!

Don’t be afraid to play around with patterns, colours, and textures for your outfits as well!

This is a great time to match up your outfits to complement each other.

If you’ve decided on an outdoor, nature vibe, consider going with an ethereal dress.

If you’ve decided to go with a cafe/brewery, consider going with comfy sweaters and jeans.

If you’ve decided to go with a city session, consider going with an evening gown.

Too many outfits to choose from? Ask your photographer how many outfits options they allow!

We can accommodate multiple outfit changes (depending on the locations) so you can bring a casual outfit and a formal outfit to your shoot.
